Where the Crawdads Sing

Roles
A novel based on the low country, "Where the Crawdads Sing" written by Delia Owens tells the story of a young girl in a "survival of the fittest" environment. The goal of this title sequence was to view the world through her eyes, and give the audience an appreciation for the world she grew up in, however raw and unbridled it was.

Sound Editing/Selection
I combined a mixture of my own shots from a Canon EOS Mark iii, and stock footage. The shots I took included the dead snake, shack, trees, and runaway crabs, which all took place in the swamps and salt marshes of Savannah, Georgia. Other shots, such as the clouds, bees, boat, heron and cattail were stock footage. I color corrected the shots I took, along with the ones I found to bring about a cohesive piece.
Understanding the authenticity and drama of the novel, I chose the haunting folk song "Trouble and Woe" by Ruth Moody to enforce the visuals.
I chose a combination of Mrs Eaves OT and MT Eaves to reference the encyclopedia the main character creates, as she records the flora and fauna of the area.
Styleframe Exploration
Type Exploration
The novel is embedded with references to self taught science and research of the main character's environment. For this reason, the type needed to reflect this educational element. I chose "Mrs. Eaves OT" and "Mrs Eaves" to replicate the typeface found within a dictionary or encyclopedia.
Result
Initially, I had planned for the sequence to be illustrative, like looking into the page of a dictionary. Going with live action proved to be truer to the novel and vibrancy of the story.
